About Monster Names

Named monsters hit harder than unnamed ones. The trick is that a monster usually has two names: whatever it calls itself, and what terrified locals call it — and the second one is almost always better.

Naming Patterns

  • Name the Epithet — Vorgath the Worldbreaker
  • The local name — The Thing in the Weir
  • Harsh sounds — for beasts, consonants do the work

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I name a boss monster?▼
Give it a name and an epithet. Vorgath the Worldbreaker sounds like a threat with history, while Vorgath alone is just a word.
Should players learn the monster's real name?▼
Withholding it works well. Let them hear the local nickname first and discover the true name later, ideally at an inconvenient moment.
What makes a name sound monstrous?▼
Hard consonant clusters and abrupt endings for beasts. For aberrations, do the opposite — names that are hard to pronounce or seem to have too many syllables.
Do undead follow different naming rules?▼
Often they keep a mortal name that has decayed, which is why a half-remembered noble name attached to something awful is so effective.
