About Forgotten Realms Naming

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses standard D&D naming conventions, which means the phonology is well documented and consistent. Each race has a published sound, and sticking to it is what makes a character name read as belonging to the world rather than to the player.

The two most distinctive in BG3 are githyanki, whose names are harsh and consonant-dense, and tieflings, who often carry either an Infernal name or a chosen virtue name instead.

The Patterns By Race

  • Githyanki — hard clusters, apostrophes, abrupt endings
  • Tiefling — Infernal roots, or a virtue name taken by choice
  • Drow — elven flow loaded with harder consonants
  • Half-Orc — short and blunt, often with a human surname

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official Baldur’s Gate 3 names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Larian Studios or Wizards of the Coast. It generates original names that follow the naming conventions each race uses in the Forgotten Realms setting.
What makes githyanki names distinctive?▼
Density of consonants and abrupt endings. They avoid soft flowing vowels almost entirely, which is what makes them sound so unlike the elven and human names around them.
Should my tiefling have a virtue name?▼
It is a strong character choice. Many tieflings reject an Infernal heritage name and take a virtue instead — Hope, Creed, Sorrow — which says something about them before they speak.
Can I use these names outside BG3?▼
Yes. They follow general D&D naming conventions, so they work equally well in tabletop campaigns, other Forgotten Realms games, or any high-fantasy setting.
