About Tamrielic Naming

The Elder Scrolls is unusually disciplined about naming. Each race draws on a distinct real-world linguistic flavour — Nords sound Old Norse, Bretons sound Norman French, Redguards sound Arabic and North African, Imperials sound Latin.

The two most distinctive are the beast races. Khajiit names carry honorifics and clan particles; Argonians use translated Jel names that read as short English phrases.

The Patterns By Race

  • Nord — Old Norse roots, hard consonants, -ulf, -gar, -björn
  • Khajiit — particles like do, dar, ma, ra marking rank
  • Argonian — translated names that read as phrases: Walks-in-Shadow
  • Dunmer — clipped, harsh, with strong clan surnames

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official Elder Scrolls names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Bethesda. It produces original names built to match each race's established phonetic style rather than reusing names from the games.
How do Khajiit names work?▼
Khajiit frequently attach a prefix particle to a personal name — do, dar, ma, ra and others — historically indicating rank, clan or standing. The apostrophe form (J'zargo style) is the most recognisable version.
Why are Argonian names English phrases?▼
Argonian names are presented as translations from Jel, their own language, which is why they read as short descriptive phrases like Walks-in-Shadow. Many Argonians in Imperial society also adopt a simpler name.
What makes a name sound Nord?▼
Old Norse influence. Hard consonants, compound roots, and endings like -ulf, -gar, -bjorn and -dis. If it would suit a Viking saga, it will suit Skyrim.
