About Wasteland Naming

Fallout runs on retro-Americana frozen in 1950s amber. Vault dwellers keep pre-war given names because the vaults preserved the culture along with the people. Everyone outside has drifted.

Raiders take names the way street gangs do — loud, short and threatening. Settlers keep plain working names. Ghouls often keep the name they had two hundred years ago, which is quietly the saddest convention in the setting.

MythicNames is an independent fan tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Bethesda Softworks. Names are procedurally generated and free to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a name limit in Fallout?▼
The games are single-player with a generous name field, so there is nothing to work around. These suit original characters, tabletop and fan fiction.
Why do vault dwellers have 1950s names?▼
The vaults preserved pre-war American culture as well as its people, so the naming stayed frozen while everything outside drifted for two centuries.
What do raider names sound like?▼
Short, loud and chosen to threaten — much closer to a gang tag than a name. They are meant to be shouted across a scrapyard.
Do ghouls change their names?▼
Usually not, and that is the point. A ghoul often carries the same name they had before the bombs, which is the quietest bit of characterisation in the setting.
