About Soulslike Naming

FromSoftware naming has a signature: a plain, almost archaic name followed by a grand title. Godrick the Grafted. Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. The name alone is often unremarkable — it is the epithet that does the work, and the epithet usually describes a fate rather than an achievement.

The other trick is decay. Titles reference things already lost: the First, the Fell, the Ever-Brilliant, the Severed. Grandeur in the past tense.

The Patterns

  • Name plus title — the title carries the lore
  • Grandeur in decline — titles describe what was, not what is
  • Archaic roots — Old English and Norse fragments
  • Beasts get definite articles — the Fell Omen, the Nameless

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official Elden Ring names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to FromSoftware. It generates original names in the style the games use, rather than reusing characters from them.
What makes a name sound soulslike?▼
The structure more than the sound. A short archaic name followed by a grand title — Name, the Adjective Noun — is the pattern doing most of the work.
Why do the titles sound so mournful?▼
FromSoftware titles usually reference something already lost or corrupted. Grandeur in the past tense is the house style, and it implies a whole history without explaining any of it.
Can I use these for Dark Souls or Bloodborne?▼
Yes. The three share a naming grammar closely enough that names built for one suit the others, and they work for any decayed high-fantasy setting.
