About Hyrule Naming

Zelda gives each race a distinct sound and mostly sticks to it across decades of games. Zora names flow and stretch, full of vowels and doubled letters. Goron names are heavy and blunt, often ending in a hard consonant. Gerudo names lean North African and Middle Eastern.

Sheikah naming is the outlier and the most consistent: Japanese roots, usually with an -a or -i ending, reflecting a culture that keeps itself deliberately apart.

By Race

  • Hylian — soft, vaguely medieval European
  • Gerudo — North African and Middle Eastern roots
  • Zora — long, flowing, vowel-heavy
  • Goron — short, heavy, rock-solid

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a name limit in Zelda games?▼
The games name their characters for you apart from a short player-name field, so there is no meaningful limit to work around. These suit original characters and fan fiction.
Why do Zora names sound so different?▼
They are built to flow — long vowels, doubled letters and soft consonants — which sets them apart from the blunt Goron names deliberately.
What are Gerudo naming conventions?▼
Gerudo names draw on North African and Middle Eastern roots, and the culture being almost entirely female shapes the naming as much as the phonetics do.
Can I use these for other fantasy settings?▼
Yes. The Hylian and Sheikah names in particular work in any setting, and everything generated here is free to use.
