About Eorzean Naming

Final Fantasy XIV has some of the most rigidly structured naming in any MMO, and the game will reject names that break the rules. Each race and clan has published conventions, which is unusually helpful when you are trying to fit in.

Lalafell use rhyming or alliterative doubled forms. Roegadyn names are compound Germanic-sounding words that translate literally. Miqo'te Keepers of the Moon use a numbered birth-order prefix.

The Patterns By Race

  • Lalafell — doubled, rhyming forms: Tataru Taru style
  • Roegadyn — literal compounds: Sea Wolf and Hellsguard naming
  • Miqo'te — Seekers use apostrophes; Keepers use birth-order prefixes
  • Au Ra — Raen and Xaela differ sharply, Xaela taking tribe names

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official FFXIV names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Square Enix. It generates original names following each race's published naming conventions so they fit the setting and the game's own rules.
Why do Miqo'te names have apostrophes?▼
Seekers of the Sun use an apostrophe form where the first letter indicates the tribe and the suffix indicates standing. Keepers of the Moon instead use a prefix marking birth order, so the two clans look quite different.
How do Lalafell names work?▼
Lalafell naming favours doubled, rhyming or alliterative syllables in both given name and surname, which produces the bouncy, memorable results the race is known for.
Will the game accept these names?▼
They are built to match the conventions, but FFXIV enforces its own character limits and formatting rules. Check the result against the creation screen before committing to it.
