About Warcraft Naming

Each Azerothian race has a sound of its own, and the game is remarkably consistent about it. Orcs get hard, clipped syllables. Trolls use an apostrophe to split a title from a name. Tauren and night elves take compound surnames built from two plain English words welded together.

Once you can hear the pattern, names stop being random and start feeling like they belong to a people.

The Patterns By Race

  • Orc — short, hard syllables, often an earned epithet
  • Troll — an apostrophe separating two parts (Vol'jin, Sen'jin)
  • Tauren & Night Elf — compound surnames: two nouns joined
  • Goblin — comedic, commercial, ending in a hard consonant cluster

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official World of Warcraft names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Blizzard Entertainment. It generates original names built to match the phonetic style of each race, so they sound at home in Azeroth without being taken from the game.
Why do troll names have an apostrophe?▼
Troll naming commonly splits a name into two parts with an apostrophe, as in Vol'jin and Sen'jin. The pattern reads as a title joined to a personal name and is one of the most recognisable naming conventions in the setting.
How do tauren surnames work?▼
They are compounds of two plain words describing a trait or role — Bloodhoof, Runetotem, Windrunner. Building your own from the same word stock is the quickest way to get an authentic-sounding result.
Will these names be free on my realm?▼
That depends entirely on your realm and the game's own name rules. Procedurally generated names tend to be less contested than obvious ones, but you may still need to try a few.
