About BattleTags
A BattleTag is 3 to 12 characters, letters and numbers, and it cannot start with a number. Blizzard appends a four-digit code automatically, so your tag does not need to be globally unique — which gives you far more freedom than the length suggests.
Twelve characters is tight. Short, punchy tags work; compound phrases do not.
What Works
One strong word — the tag appears constantly in the kill feed
No leading digit — the single most common rejection
Readable at speed — teammates call it out mid-fight
Role-agnostic — you will not always play the same hero

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a BattleTag be?▼
Between 3 and 12 characters. Letters and numbers are allowed, accented characters are permitted, but a BattleTag cannot begin with a number.
Does my BattleTag need to be unique?▼
No. Blizzard adds a four-digit code automatically, so several players can share the same tag text. That makes short, clean tags far more achievable than in most games.
Does a BattleTag change cost anything?▼
Blizzard grants one free change and charges for subsequent ones, so it is worth settling on something you will still want later.
Does this work for other Blizzard games?▼
Yes. The BattleTag is a Battle.net account name, so it carries across Overwatch, Diablo, Hearthstone and the rest.
