About Imperial Naming

Warhammer 40,000 naming is gothic Latin filtered through forty thousand years of decay. Space Marine names lean heavily on Roman and Greek roots because the Imperium is Rome in space, and the further from Terra you go the stranger the corruption gets.

The xenos factions invert this deliberately. Ork names are blunt, phonetic and comedic. Eldar names are long, flowing and layered with titles. Necron nobility take dynastic throne-names.

The Patterns By Faction

  • Space Marine — Roman and Greek roots, one name plus rank
  • Ork — short, phonetic, spelled the way it sounds
  • Eldar — flowing, multi-part, heavy with titles
  • Inquisitor — grand Imperial Gothic with ordo affiliation

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official Warhammer 40K names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Games Workshop. It generates original names in the style each faction uses rather than reusing named characters.
Why do Space Marine names sound Roman?▼
The Imperium is built on deliberately Roman imagery, so its naming draws on Latin and Greek roots. Chapter culture shifts this — some chapters use Norse, Slavic or Japanese-influenced naming instead.
How do Ork names work?▼
Phonetically. Ork names are short, blunt and spelled the way an Ork would say them, usually paired with a title describing what they do to people. Simplicity is the point.
What makes Eldar names distinctive?▼
Length and flow. Eldar names run long, often with several components and a title, reflecting a species that lives for millennia and takes naming seriously.
