About Thedas Naming

Thedas splits its naming by culture rather than species. A Ferelden human and an Orlesian human sound nothing alike — one is blunt and Anglo-Saxon, the other is French and ornate — and that difference carries most of the setting’s politics.

Elves split harder still. Dalish names come from elven roots and are chosen with care; city elves take whatever the human city around them uses, which is the whole tragedy in one convention.

MythicNames is an independent fan tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with BioWare or Electronic Arts. Names are procedurally generated and free to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a name limit in Dragon Age?▼
The games allow a generous name field and are single-player, so there is no meaningful limit to work around. These names suit original characters, tabletop and fan fiction.
How do Dalish and city elf names differ?▼
Dalish names come from elven roots and are deliberately kept. City elves usually carry human names from whichever city they live in, which is the point the setting is making.
What do Qunari names sound like?▼
Qunari names are often titles or roles rather than personal names, reflecting a culture where what you do defines you far more than who you are.
Why are Orlesian names French?▼
Orlais is built on French court imagery, so its naming follows. Set against Ferelden’s Anglo-Saxon bluntness, the contrast does a lot of the setting’s political work.
