About ESO Naming

Elder Scrolls Online is unusually generous: up to 25 characters, and it accepts spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. That is enough room for the full two-part names the setting actually uses, which most MMOs force you to abbreviate.

Each race draws on its own language, so the race you pick should decide the sound of the name rather than the other way round.

By Race

  • Nord — Old Norse roots, hard consonants
  • Dunmer — Dunmeris word-stock, often two parts
  • Khajiit — Ta’agra roots with honorific prefixes
  • Argonian — translated Jel, so short descriptive phrases

MythicNames is an independent fan tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with ZeniMax Online Studios or Bethesda. Names are procedurally generated and free to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can an ESO character name be?▼
Up to 25 characters, including spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. That is far more generous than most MMOs and leaves room for full two-part names.
What do Khajiit name prefixes mean?▼
The J-, Ra-, S- and Do- prefixes in Ta’agra carry meaning about rank, age and standing. They are not decoration, so stacking them at random reads as nonsense to anyone who knows the setting.
Why do Argonian names sound like English phrases?▼
Many Argonians use a translated form of their Jel name, which comes out as a short descriptive phrase. That is why they read so differently from every other race in the game.
Can I use spaces in an ESO name?▼
Yes. ESO permits spaces, hyphens and apostrophes, which is what makes the setting’s traditional two-part names possible in-game.
