About Old World Naming

Warhammer Fantasy is Renaissance Europe with the volume turned up. The Empire is unmistakably German, Bretonnia is Arthurian French, Kislev is Russian. Unlike most fantasy, the real-world source is not disguised at all — it is the joke and the atmosphere at once.

Dwarfs use clan names and grudges. High Elves run long and formal. Chaos names are Empire names that have gone wrong, which is exactly how they should read.

MythicNames is an independent fan tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Games Workshop. Names are procedurally generated and free to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as Warhammer 40K?▼
No. Warhammer Fantasy is the Old World setting — Renaissance Europe with monsters — while 40,000 is the science-fiction one. We have a separate 40K generator for that.
Why do Empire names sound German?▼
Because the Empire is openly modelled on the Holy Roman Empire. The setting does not disguise its sources, and that is a large part of its character.
What makes Bretonnian names distinct?▼
Arthurian French, formal and chivalric, usually with a de and a place. They read as knightly by design.
Is there a name length limit?▼
No. This is a tabletop and single-player setting, so there is no name field to fit. These suit army characters, roleplay and fiction.
