About Gielinor Naming

RuneScape splits neatly in two. In-world NPC names lean on plain medieval English — Duke Horacio, Hans, Bob — and stay deliberately unglamorous. Player names are a different species entirely, shaped by a 12-character limit and two decades of convention.

The regional cultures have their own logic. Fremennik names are Norse. Gnome names are comic and multisyllabic. Dwarven names lean Germanic with a mining bent.

The Patterns

  • NPCs — plain, medieval, unpretentious
  • Player names — short, punchy, within the character limit
  • Fremennik — Norse roots, patronymic endings
  • Gnome — long, silly, alliterative

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these official RuneScape names?▼
No. This is an independent fan tool with no connection to Jagex. It generates original names in the style the game uses across its regions and NPC types.
Will a generated name be available in game?▼
Possibly not. RuneScape has a very long history and most short names are taken. Longer or more unusual combinations have a better chance.
What is the character limit for RuneScape names?▼
Display names are limited to 12 characters, which is why so much player-name convention involves abbreviation and creative spacing. Names here are kept within reach of that.
How do Fremennik names work?▼
They are Norse-derived, frequently with patronymic endings, matching the Fremennik Province's Viking-inspired culture. They stand out sharply from Misthalin and Asgarnian naming.
